TYPICAL ITINERARY
Istanbul, Turkey
Spanning Europe and Asia, exotic Istanbul is one of the world's most fascinating cities. Domes and minarets enhance the skyline. In the old Stamboul area, traces remain of every city built since the community was established over 600 years before Christ. Once Rome's eastern capital, Istanbul was also the center of the huge Ottoman Empire. Landmarks include Hagia Sophia, once Christendom's greatest church; the Blue Mosque with its striking Iznik tiles; Topkapi Palace, containing a sultan's ransom of treasures; Chora Church with its Byzantine mosaics; and the Grand Bazaar, the ultimate shopping experience.
Nessebur, Bulgaria
Nesebur, the ancient Mesembria, was founded in 510 BC by Greek Chalcedonians on an earlier Thracian settlement site. Mesembria prospered as a trade center until the Roman conquest in the first century. Under the Byzantine Empire, Mesembria regained its former importance and its prosperity during that time is evidenced by a number of imposing churches built in the 5th and 6th centuries. Byzantine nobles continued to build churches until the town contained as many as forty. Although Nesebur passed back and forth between Byzantium and Bulgaria many times beginning in the 9th century, the town miraculously remained physically unscathed throughout. Its strategic importance diminished however and Nesebur ceased as a trading center in the 18th century. Today its residents are fishermen or are involved in tourism. Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, this picturesque island town boasts the most varied architecture in the Balkans. See Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, Turkish and Bulgarian architecture pleasantly juxtaposed along labyrinthine lanes teeming with activity, charming cafes and small boutiques.
Constanta, Romania
Originally founded by the Greeks in the 7th century BC, Constanta is Romania's only major sea port. Rich in history and heavily influenced by centuries of Turkish rule, this capital of the Dobruja region is now a prime center for oil exploration, textiles and furniture manufacture. Part of the old Roman wall and the Butcher's Tower remains from the settlement that was then called "Tomis". The poet Ovid lived out his last years in exile here. The fine Archeological Museum features a rich collection of artifacts including several Roman statues discovered beneath the old railway station in 1962.
Odessa, Ukraine
Odessa, known as the "Pearl of the Black Sea" is a crossroads of cultures, languages and trade, as well as a major seaport and industrial center. Past associations make it dear to Russian hearts - in the 1820s, Pushkin spent some of his time in exile here - and historically it conjures up reminders of Turkish campaigns and of revolutionary activities, which were strongly supported in 1905 by the mutinous battleship Potemkin. Miles of prime beaches attract scores of Eastern Europeans to this "Riviera of the Black Sea." Odessa also features various points of architectural interest including the outstanding Opera House and several interesting museums and former palaces.
Yalta, Ukraine
Founded by Byzantines at a point equidistant from the equator and the North Pole, Yalta has an ideal Mediterranean climate. Yalta has long been a holiday retreat for the elite of Tzarist Russia and the former Soviet States; the Romanovs, Pushkin, Gorky, Chekhov, and more recently Brezhnev and Gorbachev, have spent time here. Located on a sheltered bay, Yalta is lush with flowers, shrubs and exotic plants.
Sinop, Turkey
Sinop is situated on the most northern edge of the Turkish side of the Black Sea coast, in the ancient region of Paphlagonia, in modern-day northern Turkey. Historically known as Sinope, it is the capital of Sinop Province. Today's Sinop is a charming little town, little touched by modern developments, and with short distance between the landmarks. The centre is to a large extent surrounded by a wall that dates back some 2500 years. The main monuments are a ruined ancient citadel rebuilt during Byzantine and Seljuq periods, some isolated columns and inscribed stones from the early Greek and Roman periods. There is also a good mosque and medrese, some bath houses and a restored Museum.
